Job Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for using the Hospital’s motorcycle/bike for transporting (delivery and collection) documents and packages for all departments of the hospital including medical and blood products and will conduct transactions for the hospital as required. The candidate will be responsible for the hospital’s courier function and other transactions and will be expected to work in varying environments, collecting and distributing packages, mail and other items in a safe, efficient and confidential manner to support the operations of the hospital while abiding by the Road Traffic Act, AMH policies, safety rules, and other applicable regulations.
Main duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Delivers and collects mails, documents and packages for AMH as required.
- Delivers and collects medical products (blood products etc.) for AMH as required.
- Conducts transactions for the Hospital at any agency or organization when instructed.
- Provides reliable delivery/collection and messenger services.
- Maintains delivery records and submits daily disbursement/assignment log.
- Ensures that the motorcycle/bike is logged in and out on a daily basis.
- Always wears appropriate safety gears while operating the motorcycle/bike.
- Ensures appropriate use, storage and maintenance of motorcycle/bike.
- Ensures all documents relating to motor bike (i.e. insurance certificate, fitness and registration) are current.
- Conducts routine checks to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of the motorcycle/bike.
- Reports mechanical and other defects of the motorcycle/bike to Supervisor.
- Arranges for motorcycle/bike to be taken to the garage for repairs and to the Examination Depot for certification of fitness.
- Inspects work done by repairer for satisfactory completion.
- Performs other related duties as required.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE JOB:
The suitable candidate must be the holder of the following:
- Must possess a valid motorcycle/bike license.
- Must have at least 5 CSEC/CXC subjects, including Mathematics and English.
- Knowledgeable of Kingston, St. Andrew areas.
- At least two (2) years’ experience as a bearer or in a similar capacity

The successful candidate should possess the knowledge, skills and abilities as stated below:
- Excellent motorcycle/bike riding skills.
- Good interpersonal skills
- Good communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to exercise initiative within the constraints of the job.
- Ability to organize/prioritize work per the operations of the hospital.
- Ability to communicate with persons at all levels
- Ability to carry out routine maintenance to motorcycle/bike.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS REQUIRED:
- Duties are typically performed by operating a motorcycle/bike on the roadway in varying temperatures and weather conditions. Work is typically performed by riding, sitting, walking or standing. Physical stamina is required to tolerate standing, stooping, reaching, grasping, kneeling, walking, bending, lifting, safely carrying documents, packages/objects in a messenger bag and operating the motorcycle/bike. The ability to withstand temperature variances is required. Verbal and written communication is required for expressing or exchanging information; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operating the motorcycle/bike and the other tasks required including determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing the general surroundings and activities.
