Job Summary

The Scrub Technician is responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field before, during, and after surgical procedures. The incumbent assists surgeons and nurses by ensuring that all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are available, sterile, and properly handled throughout the operation, in line with hospital policies and infection control standards.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field for all procedures.
  • Select, prepare, and arrange surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment on trolley.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during procedures.
  • Pass instruments and supplies safely and efficiently to the surgeon.
  • Monitor and maintain the sterility of the operating environment.
  • Handle surgical specimens appropriately and in line with established protocols, ensuring they are collected properly.
  • Count instruments, sponges, and other items before and after procedures in collaboration with circulating staff.
  • Assist with cleaning, decontamination, and restocking of instruments and operating theatre after surgery.
  • Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control policies.
  • Ensure that aseptic technique is maintained throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Support theatre staff and surgeons with any additional tasks related to safe patient care.

Academic Qualifications & Experience required for job:

  • Successful completion of prescribed six (6) months training course for Scrub Technician
  • Prior experience in an operating theatre or surgical environment (preferred).

Functional Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques and infection control practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.
  • Good manual dexterity and ability to handle delicate instruments. Should be able to maintain arm-hand steadiness.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations.
  • Professionalism, reliability, and integrity.
  • Good interpersonal skills and positive work attitude.
  • Punctuality and sound ethical conduct.
