Job Summary

The incumbent will participate as an integral member of the Andrews Memorial Hospital health care team by performing both quality diagnostic ultrasound and radiography examinations for our clients in a safe, efficient and professional manner and will be a part of an essential service team with the flexibility to ensure 24 hour coverage is delivered.

Job Summary

The incumbents will be responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. The Nurse Midwife performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations in collaboration with the patient’s medical and allied health team. The Nurse Midwife promotes safety and quality in clinical care and maintains an effective working relationship with support areas for optimum patient care.

Essential Duties

  • Ability and attitude to work and respond to the needs of culturally diverse clientele.
  • Maintains  professional and legal licensing standards.
  • Evaluates patients and render care, within the scope of practice outlined by the Nursing Council of Jamaica.

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

Aseptic Technique

  • Assists Obstetrician with procedures relating to the ante, intra and post partum patient e.g. AROM.
  •  Scrubs and circulates for Caesarean Section and Tubal Ligation
  • Performs vaginal examination and assesses effacement, dilatation, station, presentation, position of fetus.
  • Set up a C/Section table

Interventions During Labour

  • Change woman’s position as necessary.
  • Coaches in breathing and relaxation technique.

Intravenous Therapy

  • Mix, IV infusions using additives

  • Regulates IVs in order to titrate according to patients’ needs
  • Uses heparin locks, keeps them clear
  • Draws blood for laboratory studies
  • Initiates and monitors blood products
  • Use IV pumps
  • Discontinues peripheral IV’s

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

  • Administers IM, SC medications (analgesics, anticonvulsants, insulin, heparin, labour suppresants
  • Administers narcotics, antibiotics
  • Monitors IV drips
  • Carries out Oxytocin induction/ and augmentation

OBSTETRIC TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES

  • Carries out maternal / fetal surveillance using electronic monitoring, interpreting strips, reporting abnormalities promptly and recording.
  • Intervening promptly and effectively or evidence of fetal or maternal compromise.
  • Assesses and documents fetal status.
  • Determines fetal presentation and position.
  • Auscultates fetal heart rate (FHR) using fetoscope or electronically.
  • Monitors uterine contractions using totransducer, untrasound, internal monitor
  • Identifies FHR patterns – variability reactivity, decelerations – early, late, variable, tachycardia, bradycardia
  • Assesses and documents maternal status – deviation from the norm – edema, deep tendon reflexes, clonuses, intake and output, testing of urine for glucose, protein, SG, ketones, vital signs according to stage of labour and patient stability.
  • Assess and document progress of labour – contraction characteristic, changes in the woman’s behaviour, appearance, status of membranes
  • Evaluate fetal activity.
  • Prepare patient for and assist with ultrasound scan
  • Conduct Stress (oxytocin challenge) and Non-stress tests and interpret results – report abnormalities promptly.

INTERVENTIONS DURING DELIVERY

  • Prepare room for normal delivery

Job Summary

The successful candidate will assess, manage and treat patients in our Out-Patient/Emergency Department.

Main duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage common emergencies e.g. acute MI, acute asthma, multiple trauma, etc.
  • Perform minor surgical procedures e.g. suturing, basic POP, I&D of abscesses, etc.
  • Refer patients to Specialists where appropriate -urgent/ routine.
  • Provide follow up care for patients with chronic illnesses e.g. Hypertension, Diabetes, etc.

Academic qualifications and experience required for job:

  • Interview and examine patients to generate a differential diagnosis list
  • Review previous notes as available
  • Order appropriate investigations
  • Interpret the results of these investigations
  • Initiate initial management of patients
  • Make further decisions regarding the patient management, i.e. admission, transfer, or treatment as an out-patient
  • Refer patients to the appropriate specialty team or transfer patients in a timely manner as necessary

Emergent Patients:

  • Decisions made in the management of these patients usually make the difference between life and death. The Emergency Room Medical Officer must therefore:
  • Assess patients that enter the emergency room immediately and oversee emergency patient’s recovery
  • Make the decisions to and perform the initial ABC’s of resuscitation
  • Institute appropriate means of hemostasis where necessary
  • Make decisions regarding the use of electrical therapy in the treatment of a cardiac arrest and carry out this function as necessary
  • Decide when to and perform life-saving procedures (listed below)
  • Inform the appropriate specialist service and maintain hemodynamic stability until they arrive, or patient is transferred
  • Other actions/procedures as directed by the Outpatient/ Emergency Department Supervisor.

Job Summary

The incumbent will be required to provide care to patients with various types of illnesses or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions in addition to general Nursing care. ER nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class of nurses differs from others in that:

For each specialty the nurse must acquire the specific advanced anatomical, psychological and therapeutic knowledge and skills specific to the care of the patient. Calculated, quick decision making is an integral part of the nurse’s function. Work involves the utilization if high technology and is performed in specialized areas  such as the Operating Theatre, Intensive Care Unit, Recovery Room, Emergency Room and Out-Patient Departments, Burn Unit, Etc.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Academic Qualification and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a professional nurse.
  • Successful completion of the prescribed training course Emergency room Nursing (CEN)
  • Minimum of one (1) year emergency room (ER) nurses experience
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Cognitive skills related to the position

Position Responsibility

ER nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of ER Nurses include (but are not limited to):

  • Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed history and then consults and coordinates with the health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
  • Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements
  • Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol
  • Knows the rudiments of and participates in situations requiring advanced cardiac life support measures
  • Initiates corrective action wherever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology
  • Records patients’ current vital signs
  • Works directly under physicians, assisting them during examinations, diagnostic testing and treatments
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, parenterally) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse
  • Provides IV therapy
  • Cleans and bandages wounds
  • Provide basic bedside care
  • Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients
  • Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies
  • Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by the physician. Job Summary

Andrews Memorial Hospital pharmacy provides a diverse outlook in the field of pharmacy. We serve the medication needs of both hospitalized (in-patient) and ambulatory (out-patient) patients, as well as the general pharmaceutical stock needs of the entire hospital. As a result, excellent interdepartmental collaboration plays an integral role in our operations. The Pharmacist is responsible for the preparation and verification of all medication orders for both hospitalized and ambulatory patients. This individual also provides counseling and medication advice for both patients and physicians. Also incorporated into this post is a diverse range of compounding and reconstitution of medications, checking of patients’ vitals and other health promotional activities. Paramount to the completion of these tasks is an excellent customer service skill.

Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities

The Pharmacist is required to perform the following:

  • Prepare medicine prescription for clients.
